Headquarters, 9th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 10772 (November 18, 1968)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel (Infantry) Jack Richard Logan (ASN: 070825), United States Army, for gallantry in action involving close combat with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Lieutenant Colonel Logan distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 18 October 1968, while serving as Commanding Officer of the 6th Battalion, 31st Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division, on a reconnaissance in force mission northwest of Cai Be. When his unit was called upon to reinforce another battalion which was in heavy contact with a large enemy force, Lieutenant Colonel Logan courageously directed his helicopter in repeated low level runs through intense hostile fire to mark landing zones and control the link up of the companies which were inserted. Having completed the airmobile phase after darkness, he landed in the midst of the heavy fighting and joined with one of his companies at the scene of the fiercest engagement. Lieutenant Colonel Logan then established his command post in an area which was subject to the Viet Cong fire and coordinated the movement of his troops throughout the night. As a result of the engagement, fifty-nine of the enemy were killed and large amounts of enemy equipment captured. Lieutenant Colonel Logan’s extraordinary heroism and devotion to duty in close combat with an armed hostile force are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 9th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
