James Pierce graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York, Class of 1950. He was killed in action while serving as a U.S. Army First Lieutenant in the Korean War. His father was Major General James Robinson Pierce, and father and son are buries side-by-side at West Point.

    (Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Infantry) James Robinson Pierce, Jr. (ASN: 0-62700), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company L, 3d Battalion, 179th Infantry Regiment, 45th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Korea, on or about 16 June 1952. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by First Lieutenant Pierce, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
