The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major (Infantry) William Frederick Bauman, United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Major Bauman distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as Commanding Officer and as a Helicopter Pilot with the 197th Assault Helicopter Company, 11th Aviation Brigade, in action against the enemy in 1967. Major Bauman led his helicopter group in a combat assault north of Saigon and came under heavy Viet Cong fire in the landing zone. Although five of his helicopters were downed and eight others damaged, Major Bauman stayed in the area and directed supporting fire from ten gunships. He effected the rescue of five downed helicopter crews, coordinated recovery of the craft, and directed air and artillery strikes against the enemy. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Major Bauman, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
