Robert Thomas enlisted in the Navy at age 17, and was subsequently discharged to enter West Point. He graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York, Class of 1953. He died in an air accident while serving as a U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel during the Vietnam War.

    (Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major (Infantry) Robert Joseph Thomas, United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Major Thomas distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as Executive Officer of an Infantry Battalion and Assistant G-1 of the 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), in action against the enemy in 1966 and 1967. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Major Thomas, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
