United States Military Academy Register of Graduates

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major William Russell Davis, United States Air Force, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Major Davis distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as Pilot of an A-26 Attack Bomber of the 609th Air Commando Squadron, 56th Air Commando Wing, SEVENTH Air Force, in action against the enemy in Southeast Asia, on 24 November 1967. On that night, Major Davis attacked and re-attacked a critical line of hostile force re-supply, and the 37-millimeter cannons defending that line. In the face of eight 37-mm. guns, Major Davis destroyed one gun position, silenced another, and destroyed four trucks totaling 12 tons of re-supply. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Major Davis, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
