First Lieutenant Doody sent out a night patrol which came under heavy enemy mortar fire. The patrol was able to return to friendly lines except for one wounded soldier who had been left behind. First Lieutenant Doody went out to recover the wounded man, administering first aid and shielding him against enemy artillery fire with his own body, himself sustaining a shrapnel wounds. Despite his injuries, he dragged his wounded comrade to safety. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by First Lieutenant Doody, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
