(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Charles L. Hughes, United States Army, for gallantry in action involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Sergeant First Class Curry distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action in 1968, while serving as a squad leader in the 2d Battalion, 2d Infantry Regiment (Mechanized), 1st Infantry Division, on a reinforcing mission for another infantry unit which had made contact with a large enemy force. When his platoon leader was wounded, Staff Sergeant Hughes assumed command. He directed medical evacuation and on two occasions initiated a search for the missing man. The second search took him to within twenty-five yards of the hostile bunkers where he found and pulled to safety the wounded soldier. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Staff Sergeant Hughes, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
