Vaccare (ASN: 0-352766), United States Army Air Forces, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with the 706th Coast Artillery (Anti-Aircraft) Battalion, TENTH Air Force, in aerial operations in the China-Burma-India Theater of Operations, on 23 February 1943. First Lieutenant Vaccare was a anti-aircraft officer and abandoned his slit trench to warn a group of local natives of their peril from the approaching enemy aircraft when a bomb fragment pierced his helmet, killing him instantly. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by First Lieutenant Vaccare, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army Air Forces.
