The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Air Corps) Oliver R. Schultz (ASN: 0-802356), United States Army Air Forces, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving as Pilot of a Fighter Airplane of the 527th Fighter Squadron, 86th Fighter Group, TWELFTH Air Force, during a reconnaissance mission over Italy on 26 May 1944. Despite a badly damaged plane and a heavy barrage of anti-aircraft fire, First Lieutenant Schultz dove his plane to a low altitude to strafe a large concentration of enemy motor vehicles, setting fire to seven trucks and damaging six others before the smoke from his burning engine forced him to turn homeward. His plane burst into flames and he was last seen parachuting into the sea near the enemy-held coast. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by First Lieutenant Schultz, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army Air Forces.
