First Lieutenant Lattin distinguished himself in 1968 while serving as a platoon leader with the 2d Battalion, 2d Infantry Regiment (Mechanized), 1st Infantry Division, during a reconnaissance-in-force mission. When his element received intensive fire from an enemy base camp, hit armored vehicle was hit by an enemy rocket. Lieutenant Lattin extracted the wounded from the burning vehicle and carried them through heavy fire to cover. When ammunition ran low, he returned to his vehicle to get a fresh supply. He moved through the hostile fire handing out ammunition and directing his men in gaining fire superiority over the Viet Cong. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by First Lieutenant Lattin, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
