Gooris (AFSN: AF-13381439), United States Air Force, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving as an aerial gunner on a B-29 Superfortress Bomber of the FAR EAST Air Forces, in aerial operations over North Korea, during a night bombing mission in 1952. As the bomber began its return to Okinawa, it was learned that a bomb had failed to release, and that its 60-second fuse was armed. In temperatures reaching minus-40-degrees, Airman First Class Ernest Gooris crawled to the open bombay and, fighting the numbing cold, disarmed the fuse in 28 seconds, saving the lives of the thirteen members of the crew. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Airman First Class Gooris, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
