The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Harold Piper Rumberger (ASN: 1787239), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company B, 316th Infantry Regiment, 79th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Bois-de-Montfaucon, France, 26 September 1918. Failing to reduce a machine-gun nest with his rifle, Private Rumberger returned, procured an automatic rifle, attacked the nest the second time, and successfully reduced it.
