Out on a routine search mission, Sergeant Elliott and the crew of his B-17E Bomber happened across a portion of the task force off the northeast coast of Sewart Island on the morning of 25 October 1942. Being attacked by Japanese Zeros, he was killed when the Zero he was firing at exploded in front of the plane’s nose gun. It was his first combat mission. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Technical Sergeant Elliott, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army Air Forces.
