Born Elmer Kevin Carr, the Very Reverend Carr was known simply as “Father Kevin.” Ordained a priest of the Order of Saint Benedict, he was Sub-Prior of Holy Cross Abbey in Canon City, Colorado, when he entered military service in 1943 as a U.S. Army chaplain. He was one of two O.S.B. priests from that small abbey to be awarded a Silver Star in World War II. He returned to the abbey briefly after the war, and was named chaplain of the Benedictine Sister’s Convent in South Boulder, Colorado, and four years later was appointed pastor of Sacred Heart of Mary Parish in South Boulder. He then went to Saint Benedicts Parish in Florence, Colorado, in 1956. Until his death he was not only an active priest, but also was a consultant to the Florence Police Department and School Board.
