The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Air Corps) Theodore H. Broman (ASN: 0-433644), United States Army Air Forces, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving as Pilot of an A-20 Havoc Bomber with the Northwest African Strategic Air Force, in aerial operations over La Fauconnerie, Tunisia, in the North African Theater of Operations, on 30 March 1943. AS pilot of an A-20 type aircraft, Lieutenant Broman encountered intense anti-aircraft fire while over this target and his plane was hit repeatedly. As enemy fighter planes added their concentrated fire to the defense of the airdrome the plane caught fire and both gunners were critically wounded. Lieutenant Broman skillfully crash-landed his blazing ship, and, although in enemy territory and constantly subject to enemy strafing, aided his wounded comrades in extricating the trapped bombardier. When all of his crew had been removed from the plane, Lieutenant Broman led them safely through enemy patrols to medical aid and safety. His flying skill, as well as his great courage in this and many other missions, have contributed to the success of the North African Campaign. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by First Lieutenant Broman, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army Air Forces.
