Dale Bordner was one of eight members of the air crew of a B-26 piloted by Marvin Hughes, that was reported missing in action following a mission over Rabaul, New Guinea in May 1942. All eight members of the crew were awarded the Silver Star. Two men died in the ditching of their bomber, and four became prisoners of war, two of them executed while in captivity. Bordner was one of two members of the crew to evade capture and return to duty.

    (Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant [then Corporal] Dale E. Bordner (ASN: 15017025), United States Army Air Forces, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving as a member of the Air Crew of a B-26 Marauder Bomber in the 408th Bombardment Squadron, 22d Bombardment Group (Medium), FIFTH Air Force, in aerial operations over Rabaul, New Guinea, in the Southwest Pacific Theater of Operations, on 25 May 1942. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Sergeant Bordner, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army Air Forces.
