Dale Bordner was one of eight members of the air crew of a B-26 piloted by Marvin Hughes, that was reported missing in action following a mission over Rabaul, New Guinea in May 1942. All eight members of the crew were awarded the Silver Star. Two men died in the ditching of their bomber, and four became prisoners of war, two of them executed while in captivity. Bordner was one of two members of the crew to evade capture and return to duty.
