The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Harold C. Chaney (ASN: 0-1322310), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 175th Infantry Regiment, 29th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Germany. On 23 April 1945, as the 2d Battalion was advancing against enemy defensive positions, the anti-tank platoon commanded by First Lieutenant Chaney was intercepted by the enemy and subjected to intense small arms fire. Completely disregarding his own safety, First Lieutenant Cheney raced to the machine gun mounted on one of his vehicles and engaged the enemy forces. Although the enemy concentrated their fire upon his position, First Lieutenant Cheney courageously remained with his weapon until mortally wounded by the hostile fire. First Lieutenant Chaney’s initiative, courage, and unselfish devotion to duty in sacrificing his life for the men under his command reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
