The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, 20 July 1942, takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit to Lieutenant Colonel Sherman L. Fleek, United States Army, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States from November 1995 through February 2002, while serving in a series of positions culminating with assignment as Chief of Historical Services, National Guard Bureau. As commander, staff officer, and historian, Lieutenant Colonel Fleek demonstrated passion and intellect, fidelity to the Army and its ideals and a selfless love of Nation. Lieutenant Colonel Fleek’s duty performance reflects great credit upon himself, the National Guard Bureau and the United States Army.
