The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Warrant Officer One (WO-1) John D. Anderson, United States Army, for heroism while participating in the aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam on 15 March 1970. Warrant Officer Anderson distinguished himself while serving as aircraft commander of a UH-1H lift helicopter during an extraction mission southwest of Camp Evans, Republic of Vietnam. Two allied companies were surrounded by and estimated three battalions of North Vietnamese Army soldiers and had been receiving mortar and light weapons fire for several days. As Warrant Officer Anderson’s aircraft approached the small pick-up zone, it came under heavy mortar fire, with incoming mortar rounds impacting as close as thirty meters from the aircraft. Making five lifts, Warrant Officer Anderson expertly extracted the unit and minimized the exposure of his aircraft to enemy fire. His determination, skill and courage contributed greatly to the success of the extraction and prevention of many ground casualties, Warrant Officer Anderson’s personal bravery and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
