The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Specialist Cory L. Moore, United States Army, for heroism on 23 June 2007, while assigned to the 43d Combat Engineer Company, 3d Armored Cavalry Regiment. After a teenager was swept downriver by a powerful current, Specialist Moore, with complete disregard for his own personal safety, jumped into the river to swim out to the struggling girl, who was desperately hanging onto a tree branch in the middle of the river. After reaching the teenager but being unable to get her to shore, Specialist Moore remained in the raging waters for over an hour to help her hold onto the partially submerged tree. He refused to give in to the current until rescue workers were finally able to pull them both to shore. His selfless actions in putting his own life in peril undoubtedly saved the girl from drowning. Specialist Moore’s actions are in keeping with the finest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 3d Armored Cavalry Regiment, and the United States Army.
