The President of the United States of America, authorized by Executive Order 11046, 24 August 1962, takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” to Sergeant George M. Matrafailo, United States Army, for heroism in connection with military operations against a hostile force. Sergeant Matrafailo distinguished himself by heroic actions on 31 October 1969, while serving with Company C, 4th Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in the Republic of Vietnam. While on a combat operation, Company C engaged a large enemy force. Immediately, Sergeant Matrafailo began placing a heavy volume of suppressive fire on the insurgents’ positions. When the hostiles attempted to retreat, Sergeant Matrafailo, with complete disregard for his own safety, exposed himself to the enemy gunners as he threw several hand grenades, thwarting the escape. His valorous actions contributed immeasurably to the success of the mission. Sergeant Matrafailo’s bravery and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 25th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
