The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fifth Grade Reuben E. Rudd, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 58th Armored Field Artillery Battalion, in action in France on 2 September 1944. An enemy tank drove into the bivouac area, stopping approximately 15 feet away from the truck driven by Technician Fifth Grade Rudd, and five enemy personnel dismounted with their weapons. Despite the confused situation he quickly obtained his Tommy Gun and opened fire, killing three and wounding two, before they could cause any damage. This prompt action, with total disregard for his own personal safety, frustrated what apparently was a desperate attempt to break through American lines. The coolness, initiative, and courageous devotion to duty displayed by Technician Fifth Grade Rudd were an inspiration to the men with whom he served and are in keeping with the highest traditions of the Armed Forces.
