The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Charles R. Weidner, United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations against an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Sergeant Weidner distinguished himself while serving as an Assistant Team Leader with Company K, 75th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division. On 23 January 1970, Sergeant Weidner’s four man team was conducting a long range reconnaissance patrol north of Camp RADCLIFF when contact was made with an enemy force. During the engagement one of the team members fell fatally wounded. With complete disregard for his personal safety, Sergeant Weidner, accompanied by the team leader, moved through intense hostile fire in an attempt to recover their comrade’s body. While exposed, the team leader was killed and Sergeant Weidner was forced to a covered position from which he countered the enemy with small arms fire and grenades. After calling in and directing gunship support, Sergeant Weidner returned to the contact site and recovered his fallen team leader. With the arrival of reinforcements, Sergeant Weidner repeatedly led elements of the reaction force in attempts to recover the Ranger casualty still in the contact area. Finally through a coordinated effort by two platoons, the enemy position was overrun. Sergeant Weidner’s extraordinary courage, determination and exemplary devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
