The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Sergeant Anders N. Olafson, Jr., United States Army, for heroism while serving in Task Force Spartan, ed Brigade Combat Team (Provisional), 10th Mountain Division. Sergeant Olafson, at immense personal risk, distinguished himself on 8 January 2015, at 0150 hours, when his apartment caught fire in Black River, New York. Acting decisively and courageously, Sergeant Olafson maneuvered around flames and thick smoke to the second floor to alert the other tenants and lead the building’s evacuation. Upon alerting the second floor tenants, Sergeant Olafson escorted a fellow Soldier out of the building from the first floor. He re-entered the burning building, where he climbed the stairs again to lead the remaining tenants to safety minutes before the roof collapsed. His actions that evening saved the lives of the eight tenants in his building. Sergeant Olafson’s performance is in keeping with the finest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 10th Mountain Division and the United States Army.
