The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel (Infantry) Harold H. Lee (ASN: 0-63324), United States Army, for gallantry in action against a hostile force on 25 December 1966, in the Republic of Vietnam. At about 1200 hours on this date, Lieutenant Colonel Lee was preparing to leave the perimeter of Company B, 1st Battalion, 8th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division, by helicopter, when a large hostile force attacked the position. Immediately choosing to remain with his men during the attack, Lieutenant Colonel Lee ordered the helicopter to leave without him. He quickly moved into the area of heavy contact to appraise the situation, giving no thought to his own safety. Lieutenant Colonel Lee then summoned artillery and gunships, and posted himself in an exposed location in order to direct these supporting fires. He also supervised the immediate care of the wounded and their subsequent evacuation to safe areas. Again, with no thought to his own safety, Lieutenant Colonel Lee moved to the area of heaviest action to assist in locating the enemy automatic weapons and direct fire upon them. He continually moved from position to position, placing his life in jeopardy to lend encouragement to his men. Lieutenant Colonel Lee’s calm, decisive leadership and personal bravery constantly reassured the men, providing the necessary stability and guidance which enabled them to successfully repel the enemy. His unimpeachable valor in close combat is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
