The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Dennis N. King, United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving as a Platoon Leader with Company B, 1st Battalion, 2d Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action on 2 October 1969, near Dau Tieng, Republic of Vietnam. Lieutenant King was leading his platoon on a reconnaissance operation when his element came under fire from automatic weapons, small arms and rocket propelled grenades from an enemy bunker. Lieutenant King deployed his men into strategic positions and led his platoon on a determined assault of the enemy emplacement. Although wounded during the battle, Lieutenant King remained in his exposed location while directing his men’s attack. He refused medical attention until all of his wounded men had been evacuated. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army Air Forces.
