The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Harold K. Graves, Jr., United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy during a search and destroy mission on 5 November 1966, near Dau Tieng, Republic of Vietnam. Lieutenant Graves distinguished himself while leading his men in an attack against a strong Viet Cong force after being pinned down by intense enemy fire. Though wounded, Lieutenant Graves continued to advance, leading his men in an assault on an enemy bunker, all while directing the fire and encouraging his men to follow him. When the enemy was overrun and routed, Lieutenant Graves directed the evacuation of other wounded to the rear. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army Air Forces.
