The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Specialist Fourth Class Randy Bailey, United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations against an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Specialist Fourth Class Bailey distinguished himself while serving as a Rifleman with Company A, 3d Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division. On 27 April 1970, elements of the 3d platoon of Company A located an enemy force entrenched in bunkers at the top of a hill. During the initial assault on the position, Specialist Bailey was wounded, but courageously continued to advance until his weapon jammed. When a medic arrived to give him aid, Specialist Bailey took the medic’s weapon and resumed crawling forward through a hail of shrapnel from enemy grenades, rockets and mortars. The medic, realizing the severity of Specialist Bailey’s wounds, attempted to stop him and finally had to use force to restrain him and move him to a captured bunker. Specialist Fourth Class Bailey’s exceptional courage, aggressiveness and exemplary devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
