The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Johnny Cranford Belt (ASN: 18077202), United States Army, for gallantry in action in Normandy, France, on 12 June 1944. Private First Class Belt volunteered with his squad leader to deliver a message to a unit which was encircled by the enemy. Upon penetrating the enemy lines through heavy fire, they discovered that the unit had moved from its reported location. Not knowing the new location of this unit, they decided to return. Again they encountered intense fire and the squad leader was seriously wounded. When the sergeant directed Private First Class Belt to return alone, he refused to do so and with great difficulty carried him to his unit. The loyalty and heroism displayed by Private First Class Belt reflected the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
