The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Chief Warrant Officer Two (CW-2) David R. Baskett (ASN: W-3154006), United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight, evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty while serving with the 189th Assault Helicopter Company, 1st Aviation Brigade, in the Republic of Vietnam, on 6 February 1968. Chief Warrant Officer Baskett distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as the Pilot of an unarmed helicopter attempting to evacuate another helicopter shot down by enemy fire, and also as the pilot of the downed helicopter during evacuation. The downed helicopter was located outside the perimeter of a firebase and was under enemy mortar fire. He landed close to the aircraft and ran to it to determine if it could be flown out of the area, despite enemy mortar fire at both aircraft. Being convinced that it would fly, he then returned to his own ship, took off, and proceeded to direct armed helicopters to fire on the enemy mortar positions. Landing again, he ran to the downed helicopter, started the engine, and took off under continuous enemy fire. By flying the aircraft to a safe area, he saved it from destruction by the enemy. His heroic actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
