The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Specialist Fourth Class David John Huberty, United States Army, for heroic actions while serving as a member of the Fort Sill Military Police Special Reaction Team, on 8 May 1983, while rescuing a trapped free-climb victim from the face of a treacherous cliff on Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Unable to locate any specialized equipment, Specialist Huberty nevertheless rappelled to the victim’s location, secured the victim into a Swiss-seat, and attached him to his single safety line. Using his own body to shield the victim from rock slides, Specialist Huberty rappelled tandem with the victim for approximately sixty feet until another line was needed to complete the descent. By this time, darkness had fallen and Specialist Huberty worked feverishly with what little illumination was provided by a Military Police canine patrol vehicle. Demonstrating total disregard for his own safety, Specialist Huberty disconnected himself from the security of the safety line while still approximately one hundred feet from the bottom of the cliff to retrieve and attach the second line. During this time, he lost his footing twice and nearly fell due to the brittle and unstable rock composition of the face of the cliff. Despite knowing death or severe injury was unavoidable if he fell from that distance, he pressed on with the rescue until they both reached safety. Specialist Fourth Class Huberty’s display of courage and superior professional and technical knowledge were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the Military Police Corps, and the United States Army.
