The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class Edward P. Gibbons (ASN: RA-12367669), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force while serving with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2d Battalion, 12th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), in the Republic of Vietnam. Sergeant First Class Gibbons distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action during the period 3 to 4 February 1968, while serving as the Commo Chief of the 2d Battalion, 12th Cavalry, during an enemy attack near Hue, Republic of Vietnam. Disregarding his own safety, Sergeant Gibbons rapidly carried wounded personnel to covered positions for medical treatment. Sergeant Gibbons is credited with the saving of five seriously wounded individuals. Later Sergeant Gibbons accompanied the only medical doctor through the mortar fire to other bunkers where seriously wounded men needed medical treatment. On 4 February, Sergeant Gibbons again braved intense mortar fire to again aid seriously wounded men. During these two days Sergeant Gibbons was instrumental in keeping radio communications with the battalion forward elements despite the extremely difficult conditions. His actions were instrumental in the success of his unit’s mission. Sergeant Gibbons’ gallant action is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service, and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
