Headquarters, 1st Signal Brigade (USASTRATCOM), General Orders No. 1048 (December 13, 1968)

The Secretary of the Army of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Army Commendation Medal with Combat “V” to Private First Class Gary N. Iverson (ASN: RA-16944423), United States Army, for heroism in connection with military operations against an armed hostile force. Private First Class Iverson distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on the night of 4 September 1968 while detailed as bunker guard for the perimeter defense of Dau Tieng Base Camp. At approximately 20000 hours his section of the berm line came under heavy fire from AK-47’s and machine guns. From his position on top of the bunker he returned the fire with a heavy but accurate volume of fire using his M-16, M-60 and M-79 fire. The enemy was charging the wire and from his vantage point on top of the bunker he was able to bring devastating fire upon the enemy. This ground attack continued until 2130 hours when the berm line was hit with 4.2 inch and 81-mm. mortar rounds. Ignoring the mortar rounds that were landing around his position, Private First Class Iverson remained on top of the bunker where he could fire more effectively upon the enemy. Due to the courage of Private First Class Iverson, the personnel of his sector were able to resist three attacks of a reinforced North Vietnamese Army Company. The results of this action would have been tragic if it had not been for the intensity of accurate fire power put out by Private First Class Iverson. Private First Class Iverson’s gallantry in action was in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
