The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Specialist Fourth Class James Anthon Anderberg, United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy of the United States on 17 March 1971, in the Republic of Vietnam. Specialist Fourth Class Anderberg distinguished himself while serving as coxswain aboard a patrol boat in the vicinity of the Saigon Ferry Crossing. Observing smoke billowing from a South Vietnamese gunboat, his patrol boat went to their assistance. The vessel was becoming engulfed in flames and a fuel tanker was anchored nearby. Ignoring the exploding ammunition, Specialist Anderberg started to quench the flames with a fire extinguisher. Then, he grabbed a fire hose and began spraying the engine compartment which was an inferno of fire, successfully extinguishing the blaze. By his quick and competent actions, he averted possible injury to indigenous personnel in the immediate area and valuable equipment was saved. Specialist Fourth Class Anderberg’s heroic actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
