William Connelly began active duty in the Army in March 1954. He served as a tank crewman, tank commander, platoon sergeant and First Sergeant in the 761st Tank Battalion, 3rd Armored Division at Fort Knox, Kentucky. He is a veteran of service in the Vietnam War, and retired in 1983, after serving as 6th Sergeant Major of the Army from 1975 to 1979.
