William Bainbridge served with the 106th Infantry Division in WWII until his regiment was overrun during the Battle of the Bulge in December 1944. He was captured held by the Germans as a Prisoner of War until the end of hostilities. In 1972 he became the first Command Sergeant Major of the newly created United States Army Sergeants Major Academy at Fort Bliss, Texas. From 1975 to 1979 he served as the 5th Sergeant Major of the Army. He retired in 1979 and died on November 29, 2008. He is buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
