The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major (Armor) Nicholas Stephen Krawciw, United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Major Krawciw distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as S-3 (Operations Officer) of the 3d Squadron, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), in action against the enemy during an engagement with a large force of North Vietnamese Army soldiers near Cam Lo, South Vietnam, just south of the Demilitarized Zone, on 28 February 1969. While flying in a light observation helicopter, Major Krawciw helped located enemy positions and guided the squadron’s ground elements into action. His actions were instrumental in destroying a large portion of an enemy battalion. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Major Krawciw, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
