The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Larry M. Wallace, United States Army, for gallantry in action. Private First Class Wallace distinguished himself by heroic actions on 22 December 1968, while serving with Company B, 4th Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in the Republic of Vietnam. While established in Forward Patrol Base Mole City, elements of the 4th Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment came under an intense assault by a communist force. Early in the fierce battle, the enemy had breached the defensive wire and began holding friendly bunkers as a secondary defense was formed. Private Wallace refused to let his position fall into enemy hands as he maintained his defense. After several hours, Private Wallace began to take over communist-held positions. With complete disregard for his own safety, he moved to each bunker and fought his way to the primary defense line. Continuously, Private Wallace exposed himself to hostile fire in his advance to re-secure American bunkers. His valorous actions contributed immeasurably to the thorough repulsion of the insurgents, and the success of the mission. Private Wallace’s personal bravery, aggressiveness, and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 25th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
