John Costa was commissioned as a U.S. Army Air Forces First Lieutenant and served during World War II. After the war he received an appointment to West Point and graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Class of 1949. He retired in 1989 as a U.S. Army Brigadier General.

    (Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Colonel (Infantry) John Joseph Costa, United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force. Lieutenant Colonel Costa distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as Commanding Officer of the 2d Battalion, 509th Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, in action against the enemy in the Dominican Republic in 1965 and 1966. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Lieutenant Colonel Costa, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
