    Captain (Infantry)

    Division:

    3d Infantry Division

    Action Date:

    March 16 – 19, 1951

Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 240 (June 30, 1951)

The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” to Captain (Infantry) Oliver Beirne Patton (ASN: 0-26747), United States Army, for heroic achievement during ground operations against a hostile force as a member of Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. During the period 16-19 March 1951, near Seoul, Korea, while serving as an Assistant G-2, Captain Patton entered an area recently evacuated by the enemy and known to be heavily mined and booby trapped. Captain Patton’s mission was to obtain intelligence information of the type and characteristics of enemy defensive installations, and although the area had not yet been cleared by engineer demolition teams, he traversed it freely, entering enemy bunkers and defensive installations with complete disregard for his own safety. As a result of Captain Patton’s initiative and courage, much valuable intelligence information was obtained that materially benefited the 3d Infantry Division and higher echelons in future operations. Captain Patton’s heroic performance of this mission reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
