The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Field Artillery) Joseph Emil DeFrancisco (ASN: O)F-104609), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force while serving with Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 1st Battalion, 21st Artillery Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile) in the Republic of Vietnam. Captain DeFrancisco distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 4 April 1968, while serving as an Artillery Liaison Officer with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2d Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment, during a combat mission near Khe Sanh, Republic of Vietnam. When an infantry unit became heavily engaged with a numerically superior enemy force, Captain DeFrancisco exposed himself to the intense hostile ground fire as his helicopter landed in enemy controlled terrain to evacuate the wounded personnel. Disregarding his own safety, Captain DeFrancisco left the aircraft and began loading all of the wounded men aboard his helicopter. He remained exposed to the enemy fire until all the injured soldiers were safely on the aircraft. His gallant action is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
