The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Corps of Engineers) Roger Francis Yankoupe (ASN: OF-101791), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Captain Yankoupe distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 23 July 1968, while serving as Commanding Officer of Company C, 35th Engineer Combat Battalion, 45th Engineer Group, 18th Engineer Brigade, in action against the enemy during an enemy ambush near the Hai Van Pass, Republic of Vietnam, on 23 July 1968. Captain Yankoupe and two enlisted men were proceeding north on Highway QL-1 in a quarter-ton truck when an enemy claymore mine was detonated, hitting the jeep and wounding all personnel aboard. One of the men was thrown out of the vehicle and sustained multiple injuries as he fell on the road. The driver regained control of the vehicle and continued to drive out of the ambush’s killing zone. Captain Yankoupe, despite a severe wound to his left arm, jumped from the moving vehicle to aid his comrade who had been thrown out of it. The area came under a withering fusillade. Captain Yankoupe remained exposed to the barrage as he dragged the fallen soldier off the road to the cover of an embankment. There he administered first aid to the man, and then assisted in moving him to a safer area for medical evacuation. Captain Yankoupe’s gallantry in action was in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
