The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Charles Howard Armstrong, United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Captain Armstrong distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as Commanding Officer of Company C, 1st Battalion, 14th Infantry Regiment, 3d Brigade, 25th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 20 March 1966, during a search and destroy mission near the Ea Rok River, Darlac Province, Republic of Vietnam. As his company was moving in a well-dispersed attack formation with security on both flanks, it made contact with approximately 20 Viet Cong. Captain Armstrong immediately maneuvered his elements and personally led an enveloping force to deny the insurgents any route of escape after they withdrew into prepared spider holes. With complete disregard for his safety, Captain Armstrong then participated in the assault, killing at least one Viet Cong and inspiring his men to close with the insurgent force. Approximately 45 minutes after the initial contact, nineteen Viet Cong were killed and one was wounded and captured. Through his courage and outstanding leadership, he contributed immeasurably to the decisive victory over the Viet Cong force. Captain Armstrong’s extraordinary heroism in close combat against a hostile force was in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
