Major Boylan distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as Commanding Officer of an Infantry Company of the 1st Battalion, 2d Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in 1967. Captain Boylan was leading his company on a search and destroy mission in a Viet Cong infested area near the Cambodian border. When a platoon of his company was suddenly engaged with an enemy force of unknown size, Captain Boylan moved forward to direct a tactical withdrawal so air strikes could be conducted, and exposed himself to heavy enemy fire. He immediately reorganized the remainder of his company and led them in an assault which resulted in the death of many Viet Cong, and caused the remainder to retreat. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Captain Boylan, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
