The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Kenneth McAlpine Day, United States Army, for gallantry in action. First Lieutenant Day distinguishing himself by heroic actions on 29 August 1969, while serving as a platoon leader with Company C, 4th Battalion, 23d Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in the Republic of Vietnam. While on a night ambush patrol, elements of the 23d Infantry Regiment came in contact with a large enemy force. Immediately, First Lieutenant Day organized a reactionary force and led them to the area of contact. Realizing that the aggressors were attempting to outflank the small ambush patrol, Fist Lieutenant Day immediately directed his armored personnel carriers into strategic positions and placed devastating fire on the hostile positions. With complete disregard for his own safety, First Lieutenant Day exposed himself to the hail of fire as he moved forward and engaged the enemy force. His valorous actions contributed immeasurably to the thwarting of the enemy force. First Lieutenant Day’s bravery, aggressiveness, and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, the 25th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
