The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Charles G. Shepherd, Jr., United States Army, for gallantry in action on 2 April, 1945, in the vicinity of Siegen, Germany, while serving with Company K, 121st Infantry Regiment, 8th Infantry Division. Leading a patrol through a heavily defended area, Lieutenant Shepherd’s platoon came under fire from six or seven enemy machine guns and heavy rifle fire. Lieutenant Shepherd ordered his men back as he covered their exfiltration back to better cover. In spite of the wound in his leg, the intrepid Lieutenant then led his men in the heavy firefight that followed. Due to the leadership of Lieutenant Shepherd, over 20 Germans were killed and he did not lose one man. Lieutenant Shepherd’s courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
