The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Lieutenant Colonel (Medical Corps) Robert J. Buchman (ASN: OF-101196), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an armed enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. Lieutenant Colonel Buchman distinguished himself by valorous actions on the evening of 3 December 1968 while commander of the 67th Evacuation Hospital in Qui Nhon. Colonel Buchman was notified that a patient with a live M-79 grenade lodged in his head was being brought to the hospital. He immediately cleared the area of all nonessential personnel and secured protective armor for the individuals who would be involved in the removal of the grenade. After examining the casualty with the neurosurgeon, he determined that the surgery was too dangerous to perform in the operating room and directed that the patient be placed outside the receiving room and a sandbag barricade be built. During the operation, he assisted the surgeon by handing him necessary instruments and holding lights so he could see to operate. Although partially protected by armor, Colonel Buchman’s face and arms were continuously exposed to the possibility of an explosion. His efforts contributed significantly to the success of the operation. Lieutenant colonel Buchman’s heroic actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
