The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Captain (Medical Corps) John D. Loeser (ASN: 0-5718304), United States Army, for heroism involving actual conflict with an armed enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. Captain Loeser distinguished himself by valorous actions on 3 December 1968 as a neurosurgeon at the 67th Evacuation Hospital in Qui Nhon. A patient with a live M79 grenade lodged in his head was brought to the hospital. Captain Loeser immediately examined the man and administered the vital care needed to prepare his for surgery. After receiving an introductory briefing on the mechanics of the grenade, he began the operation to attempt its removal. The operation was performed in a sandbagged area since it was considered too dangerous for the operating room. Body armor afforded some protection, but throughout the entire operation Captain Loeser’s face and arms were exposed to the possibility of the device exploding. Demonstrating great skill and courage, he successfully removed the round, which was then harmlessly detonated by a demolition team. Captain Loeser’s heroic actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the Unites States Army.
