The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross (Army Award) to Captain Marlin L. Siegwalt, United States Air Force, for heroism, while participating in aerial flight, evidence by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam, while serving with the 196th Tactical Air Support Squadron, 504th Tactical Air Support Group, SEVENTH Air Force. Captain Siegwalt distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 31 January 1968 as a crew member aboard a forward air controller aircraft during a battle with a large Viet Cong force near the village of Dong Loch. Due to reduced visibility because of the evening darkness and smoke, Captain Siegwalt flew the ship from the back seat enabling the aircraft commander to coordinate with the ground commander. Repeatedly making low passes through intense enemy fire, he provided pinpoint target location, which permitted the precise bombing of the hostile positions without injury to nearby friendly troops and installations. His outstanding efforts contributed significantly to the success of the mission, which resulted in over one hundred and seventy killed and a cache of arms and ammunition captured. Captain Siegwalt’s outstanding flying ability and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Air Force.
