The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Lieutenant Colonel (Field Artillery) Robert Earl Whitbeck (ASN: 0-82255), United States Army, for gallantry in action. Lieutenant Colonel Whitbeck distinguished himself by exceptional gallantry in action on 30 January 1968 while engaged in military operations against an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam, serving as Battalion Commander of the 3d Battalion, 319th Artillery, 173d Airborne Brigade (Separate). Colonel Whitbeck, on his own initiative, instructed his command and control aircraft to land at a friendly fire support base which was under heavy ground and mortar attack from a combined Viet Cong-North Vietnamese Army battalion. Without regard for his own safety, Colonel Whitbeck moved in the midst of the attackers and helped to organize an effective reaction force to repulse the enemy and restore the initial perimeter. As Colonel Whitbeck was moving towards the radar bunker to ascertain the situation there, he was hit by small arms rounds. Ignoring his wounds, Colonel Whitbeck opened fire on the enemy and continued moving towards the radar bunker. At this time, he was mortally wounded. Colonel Whitbeck’s actions were performed with marked distinction. His extraordinary heroism in close combat against the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese force was in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
